Opting for Organic Surf Wax
As we have all discovered in 2020, certain items have been challenging to procure. When we were unable to stock our shelves with our regular brands of surf waxes, we were compelled to look beyond the popular scented bars with which we had grown accustomed. What we found instead is that there is a down side to surf wax. Most commercial surf waxes are made from paraffin, which is a by-product created when crude oil is refined. The resultant wax is not biodegradable and often has chemical additives that pose a risk to the environment. What is an eco-conscious surfer to do? Answer: source out the organic brands. We are proud to say we have filled the void with two amazing organic brands of surf wax:
Matunas is an eco-friendly, non-soy-based surf wax made in Santa Cruz, California. All fragrances and ingredients, like strawberries and jasmine flowers, are locally sourced from their 25-acre farm. Their surf wax is non-toxic and biodegradable and packaged with 100% recycled paper.
Bear wax is a Canadian company born in Tofino, BC. Their wax is biodegradable and non-toxic. It is made with pine oil and clay. Their products are “inspired by the raw materials provided by nature and designed to exist harmoniously with it.” Their Cold Water Surf Wax is best between 2 °C and 15 °C. So, you can surf all winter long.
